What to wear?

  • Check the weather forecast
  • Remember there is a beach!
  • Conference attire is business casual (khakis, polo shirts, etc.)
  • Nights can get quite chilly next to the sea

What to pack?

  • Remember you’ll be getting a laptop bag/backpack as part of your registration
  •  If you’re booked on a learning lab you’ll need a laptop
  • Phone/laptop/iPad chargers
  • European travel adaptors for chargers/laptops
  • If you’re taking one of the free exams, any study material you might need
  • If you are from the EU, bring your free European Health Insurance card in case of emergency
  • Business cards for networking opportunities
  • Passport!
If you’re a fan of freebies, remember to leave space in your luggage for both your conference bag and the variety of bugs, pens, stressballs and t-shirts you’ll no doubt return with!

Watch out for pickpockets

There have been numerous reports of Summit attendees losing Smart phones, passports and wallets and last year I witness several attempts on pickpocketing. As such, don’t put anything in your back pockets when out and about in Barcelona as there are lots of opportunistic thieves just watching for an easy target!

The Metro Map of Barcelona is available as a PDF here.

The conference centre is towards the bottom on the yellow M4 line “El Maresme/Forum”

Download to your Smartphone and/or print before you leave so you’ll always have it handy (and avoid any roaming data charges to download it there)

2012 update

This year, Synergy is 100% digital so there will be no printed conference guide. The agenda’s will be available via mobile apps for IOS and Android, plus a mobile site for other phones and tablets. Details and dowload links available here

Let’s hope the conference WiFi performs better than in 2011 when it was very hit-and-miss otherwise we’ll see lots of confused delegates wandering round no idea where to go!

Thanks to MoneySavingExpert.com, their fantastic screenscraper collects budget airline prices from the major players (EasyJey, RyanAir etc) and presents them in a table so you can pick the best flight to suit your schedule and budget.

Here are some convenient short-cuts for various budget travel options from the UK:

Summit only (Sunday to Tuesday)

Summit and Synergy (Sunday to Friday)

Synergy only (Tursday to Friday)

For those who prefer to, or have to, fly British Airways, or rather use Heathrow, we have a page of pre-defined searches for flying BA.

If you still fly “The Words favourite airline” (although with all the strikes, I don’t think they are anymore!) we’ve built some pre-built search links for finding the available flights on ba.com from London airports to Barcelona.

Summit only (Sunday to Tuesday)

Synergy only (Tuesday to Friday)

Summit + Synergy (Sunday to Friday)

The searches show all available flights and the different prices. If you are starting from a non-London airport, use this link

For budget airlines, see our other article in the travel section.
